Unlike regular cargo tanks, LNG cargo tanks must store liquefied natural gas at -163°C, and therefore consist of multiple layers of insulation materials and a membrane. The membrane, in particular, is made of a special alloy that can withstand expansion and contraction since it directly contacts the liquid, and is sometimes manufactured with corrugated patterns. Fig. 1 shows the No.96 and Mark III, which are representative LNG cargo tank types from GTT.
